Therapeutic Reflexology

Putting you back on the right track
Have you ever felt like your body is out of sync - tired, tense or just not quite yourself? Reflexology is a gentle yet powerful therapy that uses specific pressure points on the feet to stimulate energy flow, restore balance and support your body's natural ability to heal itself.
Each point on the foot corresponds to a different part of your body - from muscles and joints to internal organs - and by working these areas, reflexology can help address imbalances and release tensions, both physically and emotionally.
Why try Reflexology?
Reflexology is deeply relaxing, and it's more than just a treat. Regular sessions help with:
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Improving sleep quality
- Boosting blood circulation and lymphatic flow
- Relieving pain from cluster headaches and migraines
- Stimulating nerve pathways and easing neuropathic pain
- Supporting chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, joint and muscle pain
- Helping recovery after illness or injury
Even the simple act of a caring touch has been shown in studies to reduce levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), while increasing feel-good chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins - which together help ease pain, improve sleep, lift mood and support healing.
Understanding the research behind the practice
Reflexology has roots in ancient healing traditions, with evidence of similar practices found in Egypt, India and China as far back as 2330 BCE (e.g. wall paintings in the tomb of Ankmahor). Today, modern science is beginning to uncover how reflexology works - particularly its effects on the brain and the nervous system.
Recent fMRI studies led by Kevin and Barbara Kunz in collaboration with neuroscientists at the University of Minnesota nd the University of New Mexico, have shown measurable changes in brain activity when reflexology techniques are applied to specific areas of the feet. These findings suggest that reflexology may influence neural pathways beyond simple touch stimulation, offering a "proof of concept" for its therapeutic effects.
Key Research findings
- Mental Health A 2020 review of clinical trials highlighted reflexology’s potential to provide additional nonpharmacotherapy intervention for adults suffering from depression, anxiety, or sleep disturbance.
- Pain and Anxiety Relief: A 2013 randomised controlled trial found that reflexology significantly reduced pain and anxiety in patients recovering from coronary artery bypass surgery
- Brain-Based Insights: Reflexology and the Brain by Tania Macgregor summarises the Kunzes' work and explores how reflexology may stimulate specific brain regions linked to healing and emotional regulation.

Testimonial
"Serena is a great massage and healing therapist and I would thoroughly recommend her. She is highly knowledgeable holistically, professional, prompt and courteous, a delight to be around with wonderful positive energy and attuned to each and every client’s specific needs. West Kirby (and the Wirral) is lucky to have a therapist of her calibre. Serena also worked wonders on my ailing 92 year old father in law both physically and psychologically, and her experience and demeanour dealing with elderly patients with health issues makes her an excellent fit for this age group. Serena sees clients in the West Kirby treatment rooms and carries out in-home treatments as well as in-patient visits to Arrowe Park hospital if required. Last, but not least, Serena is human sunshine, and a massage session with her will lift your spirits if you are feeling under the weather - something I look forward to when visiting family in West Kirby from London."
